Leave Caerlanrig and right back onto the A7 heading back to Langholm. Look out for the Hermitage Castle sign, then turn left. Follow this road for 8 miles and you will reach the bleak Hermitage Castle.

Leaving Liddesdale Heritage Centre travel in the same direction on the B6357 for 2 miles. The Milnholm Cross is on the right hand side, but slightly elevated. Ettleton graveyard is up the track adjacent to the Milnholm Cross, and if you stand with your back to the Milnholm Cross, Mangerton Tower is in the distance.

From the Milnholm Cross continue on the B6357 at Kershopefoot for the Reiver Trail sign that leads to the Tourneyholm. Then back onto the B6357, making a left turn heading to Rowanburn/Canonbie, Travel to Rowanburn where you will see the statue of Lang Sandy Armstrong on the left.

Back onto the B6357, travel to the Cross Keys Hotel in the centre of Canonbie. Look out for the A7 signs, and when at the A7 junction turn right onto the A7 going north. In 2 miles you will see the brown signs for the Clan Armstrong Centre. Follow these brown signs for Gilnockie Tower.
